Identity begins with God’s declaration, not our development. He names us before we grow into the name. This is one of Scripture’s most powerful truths: God speaks identity over us in advance, then patiently shapes us until our lives reflect what He already knows.
God’s Naming Style: How He Calls Us Out Early
- Jeremiah – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5). Jeremiah was still a boy, unsure of himself, yet God named him a prophet.
- Moses – God said, “I know you by name” (Exodus 33:12). Moses doubted his ability, but God’s naming carried authority.
- Gideon – God called him “mighty warrior” while he was hiding in fear (Judges 6:12).
- Peter – Jesus renamed Simon as Peter, “the rock,” long before Peter showed stability (Matthew 16:18).
Each of these examples shows the same pattern: God names first, growth follows.
Formed, Known, Set Apart, Sent: God’s Blueprint for You
The words God spoke to Jeremiah are a blueprint for identity:

Why This Still Matters Now
You don’t have to wait until you “feel ready” to walk in identity. God has already named you:
- Beloved (1 John 3:1)
- Chosen (1 Peter 2:9)
- Salt and Light (Matthew 5:13–14)
- Child of God (John 1:12)
Even if you don’t see it yet, God’s naming is true. Your becoming is simply catching up to His knowing.
Think About It: Trust God’s Label, Not Your Timeline
Think of identity like a seed packet. The packet already says “oak tree” or “sunflower,” even though what you hold looks nothing like it. God’s naming is the packet – it tells you what you will become, even while you’re still in seed form.
