Identity doesn’t grow through effort – it grows through surrender. A seed cannot become what it was designed to be unless it yields to the soil around it. It breaks open, releases what once protected it, and allows the environment to shape what’s inside. That’s what surrender looks like in the life of a believer: letting God shape what He already planted.
God speaks identity first – then He invites us into a process that aligns us with what He already knows. Jeremiah was called a prophet before he ever prophesied. Gideon was called a mighty man of valor while he was hiding. You are named by God before you grow into the name.
Growth requires surrender.
Surrender is how the seed breaks open
When God whispers identity – chosen, beloved, called, set apart – something inside us shifts. But that shift only becomes transformation when we surrender to His shaping. Surrender is the seed breaking open. It’s the moment we stop resisting God’s work and start cooperating with it.
Surrender sounds like:
- “Lord, shape me.”
- “Lord, teach me.”
- “Lord, correct me.”
- “Lord, grow me.”
It’s not passive. It’s responsive.
Surrender is believing what God says – before you feel it
John 1:12 says, “To all who believed Him… He gave the right to become children of God.”
Becoming follows believing.
You don’t become confident first – you believe God’s word about you, and confidence grows.
You don’t become bold first – you believe God’s calling, and boldness blooms.
You don’t become whole first – you believe God’s healing, and wholeness forms.
Belief is the water.
Surrender is the soil.
Identity is the seed.
Growth is the result.
Worship Brings Worthship
Over 30 years ago, I was a college student walking on campus, trying to love myself, find my identity, and reconnect with God -the relationship was strained. I didn’t have all the answers, but I knew Jesus did. One day, with headphones on to block out my noisy mind, I focused on a worship song I can’t recall. God spoke to me, saying, “Worship brings Worthship.” Those words assured me I was heading in the right direction by refocusing on the Creator who knows me completely. I felt peace, realizing that Jesus would reveal who I am and help me trust what God says about me.
Surrender Happens in the Small Things
Most surrender isn’t a big moment. It’s a quiet yes.
- A yes to God’s word.
- A yes to His correction.
- A yes to His timing.
- A yes to His shaping.
- A yes to His process.
Identity grows in the daily yes.
Surrender is partnership – God’s part and your part
Identity carries dual responsibility:
- God’s part: He plants, names, forms, calls, and knows.
- Your part: You believe, yield, obey, and respond.
You don’t create identity – you cooperate with it.
You don’t manufacture purpose – you mature into it.
You don’t force growth – you surrender to Jesus who grows you.

Reflect: John 1:12 says, “To all who believed Him… He gave the right to become children of God.”
You are God’s child and He wants what’s best for you.
Commit: Give God your YES! Listen to God in prayer. Hear His will – Let God change your identity.
